Crail Pottery

Who we are

Crail Pottery

Stephen and CarolStephen and Carol Grieve started the pottery in 1965. They saw the potential in a couple of near derelict buildings in Crail and set up home i.e. they parked a small caravan in the yard! Together they rebuilt the buildings while Carol also worked in a local hotel to pay the bills.

Stephen also had the small matter of teaching himself to make pots and slowly they started selling their wares.

When their third child Sarah was on the way they moved into their present home not far from the Pottery. Here they cultivate an organic garden overlooking the sea. In the summer months Stephen fishes for lobsters and crabs from his small boat. They are now proud grandparents to seven little potters in the making.

Sarah joined the business after leaving school while Ben joined after working as a carpenter for five years. The oldest son, Jake, has a proper job as a chemical engineer but also lives in Crail with his wife Yvonne and three daughters.

Sarah and husband Ian produce a range of brightly coloured earthenware. Sarah throws all the pots while Ian assists with the rest of the production. Designer Louise Wedderburn works part time decorating many of the pots. Sarah and Ian have also created two little assistants, Jack (5) and Sally (18months)
